Starting? They've been sucking this whole post season. I wonder if they are really favoring the Yankees.

We read articles and watched vids about this in Sports Lit. today. They really are slacking and need an Umpire Advisory Board.

clearly a bad call, but at least it had no real bearing on the game. on Yahoo they are saying it's the worst call of all time, and that's just ridiculous.

I do want to defend the umpires a lot. My grandfather umped triple A ball (after playing for the indians, no bullshit), my dad single A and myself some high school games. For those who have never umped or have talked to umpires, it's hard as hell to get it all right. That call was obvious and was clearly a blown call. No doubt about it.

HOWEVER, the tag at second and the runner leaving early are JUDGEMENT calls. It's very very very hard to be a third base umpire and try and see if the runner leaves early. Think about it, it's not easy to watch a guy in the outfield and a guy right in front of you, especially in right field. I know for a fact that more people leave early and don't get ruled out than the other way around.

and you know what, the umps also made a few GREAT calls as well. That tag play at home where the ump was is almost always called out, hell that's what they teach you. However, the ump made the good call. That double play was obviously bad, but tim mccellan is an excellent umpire, top 5 in the league. I think it's been called great personally, a lot of close plays have been called right. I'd say for every 100 close plays, 90-95 get called right. For a human element like that, it's pretty damn good.

The problem with Baseball is they don't use instant replays. There is a problem when you have head Umps and Baseball commissioners and managers or whoever or anyone saying that "Human error is a part of the game." Fuck that. The game should be played by the rules. If an ump makes a bad call, don't worry, human error it happens. But shit, has anyone ever heard of a booth review? Any type of review. Managers are often seen running onto the field to kick dirt and throw bases (thanks Lou) and yell and scream in the face of an ump. I'm no rocket scientist, but I'm pretty sure there could be more effective ways (I don't know, a red challenge flag, not literally, but you see my point) to get your point across. Not that umps ever change their minds anyways.

Review bad calls, even questionable calls, it isn't like games aren't long enough already, you're not going to kill anybody by doing what you can to make the right call. Bottom line, the game should be played and the rules should be followed in EVERY SINGLE situation, bar none. An umps bad call should not allow a single hit or out that is unjustified, never the less an entire ball game. It's about time these egotistical pricks quite the high and mighty god of the field act and start using instant replay and admitting their mistakes on the spot.

Rant off, I don't even watch baseball often.

You hit the head on the nail, they need replays to remove human error.

true true they should bring instant replay into this umpires are human and do make mistakes but when they clearly make a bad call they need instant replay for this

that night was not meant for the angels...

You want to talk about terrible refereeing. This goal was allowed last weekend and was the only goal of the game:

Premier League: Sunderland 1-0 Liverpool | inside World Soccer

when the rules state "The referee stops, suspends or terminates the match because of outside interference of any kind."

So the ref was given a ban from the EPL this weekend demoted to the lower leagues.
BBC SPORT | Football | My Club | L | Liverpool | Beach ball ref given Premier rest

Honestly though, I don't think it was enough. His incorrect decision directly effected the outcome of the game.
