Download Ubuntu, burn it to a CD. Then pop it back in to your computer, it'll let you install Ubuntu "inside" of Windows. And you reboot and choose Ubuntu. If you don't like it, uninstall it like a regular program.

I prefer mint or arch, but ubuntu is good for beginners.

Pretty much any os can run inside a vm. But 512 mb of ram might not run it to well.

Burn Ubuntu to a cd, and boot it as a live cd. It will run like normal, and when you restart your pc it will load xp again.

ubuntu is the most user friendly linux install with wide support for all types of hardware and supports minimum requirements. simply put overall its top notch for beginners. do as most have suggested and download the ubuntu iso and burn it to disc, pop it in your system and reboot, making sure that your system is setup to run from cd. this allows you to play with the linux OS without having to worry about messing up any files on the windows xp installation. this also allows you to bypass having to download vmware or virtual box to try anything out. when you have decided you no longer wish to play with linux or you wish to return to windows xp simply reboot with the cd out and back to the life of window in which you came.
