Bronte chose to put a great deal of characters into her story, all living either at Thrushcross Grange, or Wuthering Heights. The fact that she kept the setting only to these two small households, both completely contrasting from one another, greatly influenced the way these characters act and think. No matter who you are, what you’re around, or who you’re around, your habits and actions can often times reflect your setting, or the people you’re around. Thus is the case with Heathcliff, Catherine (elder), and Edgar Linton. All three of these characters offer us personalities that keep our fingers flipping through the pages, sometimes out of sheer amazement of what the certain character did, or is going to do. When looking at the psychological spectrum consisting of ego, egoistic, or ID, each character happens to fall into their own category. Catherine, however, can make an arguable case for all three, on the account that she had the opportunity to taste both Heathcliff, and Edgars’ worlds. When she was younger she was able to obtain a taste for both since she had the chance to live at both houses, both containing a young man who had certain things that she wanted. Heathcliff possessed the wild, untamed spirit that she possessed in herself, and Edgar had money and social status on his side, which in their society, was the most important attribute when looking to marry. Throughout my life, I have read tons and tons of books, some consisting of the most ridiculous characters that I can imagine. Through Bronte’s use of point of view, largely consisting of first person flashback narrative, I feel that Heathcliff has obtained a spot at the top of my “always to be remembered” character list. The way Bronte had Nelly, the maid who grew up with, raised, and took care of most of these characters, tell the story, was, in my opinion, the best way to show the reader how passionate and evil this character really was. Heathcliff was a character ruled solely by passion and emotions. In his life, all Heathcliff consumed his time with, was either, seeking or planning revenge, or plotting ways to obtain Catherine. Once the latter died, Heathcliff redoubled his efforts on the former, and taking careful precautions, Heathcliff did everything in his power to make sure that Catherine would haunt him until his day came to join her in the afterlife. Taking all of that into consideration, Heathcliff without a doubt, can be classified as ID, but that’s why his character was so interesting, and I don’t feel that this story would have had the same effect had he been any other way. The fact that all of his actions were completely affiliated with his raging passions and emotions helps us begin to understand why he takes out his anger on everyone and anyone he could. When he knew that he couldn’t have Catherine completely to himself, he decided then and there that he would do everything in his power to obtain so much power that Catherine would have no choice but to be with him. So that’s when he began to slowly take over both Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights, so that even though he couldn’t have Catherine before she died, he could at least have the pleasure of knowing that he was able to become master after having no social standings whatsoever when he was first brought to the Heights. When judging all of the characters actions and attitudes, one could easily observe that Edgar Linton was the most selfless character in the book. Edgar was a character that was brought up and raised with money; therefore his personality was boring, but his morale’s and actions more than made up for it. Therefore, Edgar can be put into the egoistic category, because he was a character who instead of solely caring for nothing but himself, he devoted his life to the only two people he had truly loved in his life. When Catherine (elder) died, both Edgar and Heathcliff were severely depressed. They both loved her unconditionally and thought that life wasn’t worth living without her. Thankfully for Edgar, Catherine had a child before she died, and Edgar, after some time of mourning, got back on track and devoted his life to the nurturing of his daughter. Heathcliff on the other hand cared for nothing but Catherine, and couldn’t find the sweet release that Edgar was able to find. That alone states how much more stable Edgar is from Heathcliff and Hindley. All three characters lost the love of their lives, and all three obtained a child soon afterwards, but Edgar was the only character who could keep his head on his shoulders, and offer an excellent life for his offspring. Taking that information into consideration, one can assume that Emily Bronte used the image of what she thought a good father would be, and instilled it into Edgar Linton. Out of all the characters in the book, there probably isn’t a more self-absorbed character than Catherine (elder). Catherine, like Heathcliff, allowed her emotions to run her life, but the idea of excellent social status, allowed her to feel false emotions. Throughout Catherine’s entire childhood, all she would talk about was how much she loved Heathcliff, and how they were basically the same person. Then she met Edgar Linton, and all the money and power that came with him and Catherine was instantly attached to Edgar. Catherine was a girl who knew what she wanted, and would do whatever it took to get it. She even willed herself to die, just because she felt that both of her loves had intentionally brought heartbreak upon her. That’s the interesting part about Catherine; she is just as cruel as Heathcliff, if not worse. For someone to actually want to die, just so that they can bring sadness upon people they supposedly love, is something only someone who has truly gone mad would do. Which is what I think happened to Catherine at the end of the novel when she developed the “brain fever.” Alas, had Heathcliff never came back to Thrushcross Grange, and medaled in Catherine and Edgar’s affairs, Catherine would have never had to fight the raging passions and emotions she felt for Heathcliff. Since the setting of this book is so small, not a lot of action really takes place in what the characters do. That’s where the beauty of Emily Bronte’s writing comes into play, she was able to take such a simple story, and make it into a novel that relies on the readers interpretations of what sort of characterization she used when creating each and every character. Even the two most similar characters, Heathcliff and Catherine (elder), had different personalities and desires in life. Where Heathcliff was a man ruled by his heart, Catherine was a girl who was ruled by her need to be powerful. Heathcliff was willing to give up anything and everything just to be with Catherine, while Catherine was willing to give up a life with Heathcliff, just so that she may obtain power in society. Edgar Linton was nothing like either of these characters, mostly coming from where he grew up, but was an interesting character to observe as well. While Heathcliff and Catherine were wrapped up in their own petty wants and desires, Edgar did nothing but give himself to the two women he ever loved unconditionally. Sadly enough, he never received any sort of gratification for his egoistic actions, but he at least had the unconditional love from his daughter, who would have given up just as much for him, as he would have for her. Though that means nothing to either Heathcliff or Catherine, I’m sure that nothing in life would have made Edgar happier. Unfortunately for him, having Catherine (elder) back would be the only greater joy in his life, even though she loved Heathcliff more than him. |
