Default Musican Instruments and Highschool.

For me, school is sarting the 28th. All my life I've been big on playing instruments and I have come down to two I play now.

The Soprano Saxophone

Here's what it sounds like. : YouTube - Tim Florjancic, soprano saxophone

And The Clarinet.

Here's what it sounds like. : YouTube - Mario on Clarinet

The reason for this poll is, for highschool, I can only choose ONE and I cannot descide. I've been playing the saxophone for 7 months, the clarinet for 4 years, but I'm equaly good on both. Back in the past I played the clarinet in the school band, and the saxophone in the jazzband, freshmen aren't allowed to join jazzband in highschool though.

Which shall I choose?
Up to the polls.

They are pretty much the same instrument IMO... Same style and fingerings, just different tone. I go for clarinet since it is less annoying.

I say go for the sax. I'm a freshman starting september 3rd and I play trumpet, but the clarinet just sounds really annoying and stupid. Play the sax b/c you already played clarinet the first 4 years so get really good on the sax

The music played in high school bands usually don't even have parts for soprano sax, stick to clarinet. Does your school have a jazz band? You could play the s. sax in that.

Definitely play the sax, you gotta love that dark, sweet sound it makes... If you know what I mean...

Alright, then I guess play the clarinet for freshman year, and the other 3 years play sax in the jazz band, and ask your band director to get parts for the sax

Problem solved, and unless your director is a tool, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't let you play both instruments (unless you aren't as good as you say). Plenty of people doubled on parts in my band simply because they were good at more than one instrument, plus parts needed to be filled.

But as I said before, the Soprano Sax isn't a "symphonic" instrument so most of the music played in your concert/symphonic and wind ensembles won't have parts for.

Yeah, true. The banddirector's good but the thing is, like 80% of the year we'll be marching and doing football games, so I don't think I could play both. Also whenever I played the saxophone I usualy played parts which needed to be filled, for example trumpet, even trombone once.
