This should be fairly easy, get a:
C2D (Core 2 Dou)
some ram (which will cost you about $100 for 4GB)
Sound Card: I like the Creative cards (x-fi should do it, but there are some good alternatives as well)
Video Card: Someone else chime in on this

You mention you need this for school? I'm assuming college, for vista/xp, check to see if your school has MSDNAA. It'll allow you to download it (and other Microsoft software) for free.

Whatever you do, dont do vista, it will be the biggest trap u fall in, even thought u will be able to handle it perfectly with a good video card and 4gb of nigraz

Yeah, there's a reason why I'm still on xp x64. Been using it for almost three years now and not a hiccup.

I bought a laptop with those exact specs and using 64-bit vista on it. It's been cool so far, no real problems at all, just maybe twice my laptop has randomly restarted itself (when left on overnight) saying it had a problem or something. Not a big deal to me, and it could have been from all the tweaks I did to it for speed increases.

Overall, I haven't had any problems with vista like everyone described. I decided to give it a shot since I could always get XP onto it and it's worked out great.

You would probably have a better experience with XP on your computer Kira. Vista uses up so much ram making it be slower then it would on Windows XP.
Now there are custom editions on warez forums that are tweaked to use Less ram also (XP)..
idk, u should dual boot.

Yeah I read up on some of that awhile ago but just didn't feel like bothering with changing anything since it was custom ordered and has worked great. I'll see about checking out the info on Warez. Thanks.

Search for "TinyVista". If you go this way, test it out thoroughly as some people have a lot of problems - some do not.
