So I have a dead external HD, thinking of buying a new one then returning old one in new box to get refund or at least GCs. Anyone done this before who can tell me the chances of it working without getting caught/in trouble?

is it the kind with a harddrive inside a case??? if it is just open it and swap the hdd else you gotta see how strict is the store your bought it from on returns. some of em will open and check the serial while other just open it and see its there and return ur money. you could try swapping the serial number. heat it and and transfer. worst comes to worst if you get caught just be like damn my brother must've taken it and swap it. I'll be right back i'll go get the other one. and just leave. good luck

yea it has the HD inside and I strongly doubt they will open the external case itself to check out the HD but I am kind of worried they will check the serial number itself, just wondering what experience ppl have with this.

o then your fine with just swapping the harddrive. just act casual and dont be nervous. where is the serial number located? if its inside then you might need to do a swap. just heat it up wit a hairdryer and peel it off slowly.
