To be honest, the macbook air dosen't seem very practical. No ports and dvd drive ftl.

Go for the sony imo.

I would advice you to completely stay away from the MacBook Air. If your bent on getting a mac get a MacBook PRO or something similar. The MacBook Air is highly overpriced and doesn't include an optical drive (DVD/CD Drive), or an Ethernet adapter. It also only includes only 1 USB and 1 FIREWIRE port. So if you want to have internet access you have to use wireless which is much slower than a wired ethernet connection. The hard-drive on the Air is also very small, 60GB if I recall correctly. So yea, I personally prefer PCs over Macintosh computers, but if you have been using and enjoy using Mac then go for one of THESE

Here are some good PCs you might wanna check out:
Sony
Toshiba
Another Sony
HP Touch-Screen (cool)

So I'd mow over those ones and choose the one that best fits your interests . Well good luck to you!

Well, before choosing a brand, is there any particular purpose this machine will fill? i.e. need long battery life, gaming horsepower, etc

EDIT: Forgot to ask before, what is your budget?

I would go for the Sony or a Dell XPS series. Alienware is too much price for too little machine.

If you aren't going to be gaming much, I encourage you to go with Lenovo. It's an amazing machine that is lightning fast in pretty much anything you'd want to do.

Not alienware unless you are 95% using it for gaming. Not macbook air...
Macbooks are chill I suppose, but roll with the Dell laptops ftw.

Macbook Air sucks.

If you DON'T wanna use bots or good programs, go with a Mac.

All of the things you use on Windows aren't compatible.

u can buy parallels...a program which allows you to run windows on a mac computer:

The Apple Store (U.S.) - Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac

it is only $80. If you have any version of windows lying at home, you can use that.

Also, if you are a college student or teacher, you can get the macbook and macbook pro cheaper from apple and get a free printer with it OR if you wait till june/july...you also get a free iPod nano with it:

The Apple Store (U.S.)

The Apple Store (U.S.) - MacBook Pro

very good offer...this is what i do when i get apple computers

you get $100 off on macbook and $200 off macbook pro.

Parallels does not take up much space...it only makes your mac a tiny bit slower...not a lot...when you have it running for a long time...but that is not really a big problem
