Default Computer for 3D Modeling/Video Production

So my girlfriend's really interested in 3D modeling and Video production. But her current computer is a crappy little dell with a Pentium 3 CPU, 512MB of RAM and a 70GB HDD.

Looking for parts to make a computer that can render 3D models at moderate speed. I probably need a good graphics card, a fast CPU and a good amount of RAM.

Budget: Let's say $300-500, cheaper is better.

As in 3DS Max, Rhino, SolidWorks. Then again, 3DS and Rhino are made by AutoDesk so you could say she'd be doing AutoCAD.

She definitely needs a video card then. Its going to be hard to get a laptop with a video card with your budget.

Your best bet would be dell's outlet or ebay

Searching dell's outlet, i came across this. Its the cheapest thing with a vidcard and core2duo

128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
They also have a vostro 1510 with similar specs and price
Not the best, but i doubt you'll find better

I guess pro GPU is out of the question, the I would get crapload of ram 8GB and very fast HDD, or put bunch of SATA HDD into RAID0 (very fast) and the get a card with at least 512MB preferably 1 gig, most of the pc`s nowadays can run it, but when it comes to rendering you can go take a shower before its done lol

You can build a decent pc for $500. $300 is pushing it...

There. In red.

So since you're the computer guy 1stStrike, you got a list of parts?

A dual core should be able to run all of that. I had a shitty old Dell from 1998 that I ran Solidworks and Catia on last year. The only think I had updated on that was a graphics card. I would keep an eye out on newegg for deals or maybe look at their prebuilt ones. They had a nice quad core last week for much cheaper than I built my current computer for. Think it was about $400 not including a monitor or case. I will take a look and report back later.

Edit: Do you want to build your own or save some time with a pre-built computer? Here are two computers that should do the job. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883103222 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883103218

I can make you a parts list tomorrow if that doesn't do the job.

Eh I dislike pre-built ones ever since I found out that I could build a better computer for $400 than I could buy a pre-built for $600.

A parts list would be nice. I know CPU power, RAM, and Hard drive space are a must, but I'm stupid when it comes to Video Cards. I don't know which one is the best, which one is moderately good or which one sucks.

If your looking for cheap prices, go here
Geeks.com - Computer parts, Laptop computers, Desktop computers, Computer hardware

I think they have really nice prices, and they have alot of nice CPUS, Hard Drive's, RAM, and many others.

I do not work for this site at all, and do not advertise it.

A Rosewell 700W power supply will go on sale this afternoon for $63 on Newegg. I don't know if you get the newsletter but its in the shell shocker one.

As for the graphics card, a 9800gtx+ is more than enough. I can't remember what was in that crappy Dell, but I know that when I bought the video card three years before it wasn't top of the line to begin with. I was studying mechanical engineering for a few years, thats why I have an idea about 3-D rendering software.

The best I could do would be way over your budget, especially for modeling and rendering. Here are some suggestions though.

Vid Card: Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

CPU: Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor - Processors - Desktops

Mobo: Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Memory, This is the most important part I believe because rendering is very memory intensive and as of recent, prices for memory sticks have gone up a good amount so here's just a single set of 4gb(2x2gb) memory which is good, but I would personally prefer 6gb's for rendering 3d models.

Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ - Desktop Memory

Hope this helps.

eVGA 9800 GTX+? You mean this?: Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

And I missed that power supply.

While the Vid card is more expensive, and probably functions better for her purpose, if the 9800GTX+ works for what she wants done, I'm more than likely going to get her the 9800GTX+. Also, I'm an Intel Fag. So I'm more than likely going to go for a Quad Core or the low end i7 CPU. And then I'll just build the computer around that.

Go ahead and post them up. I may base my specs off yours and go cheaper. Or I may come into some money soon and be able to buy similar parts.

Hmm, tigerdirect has had a decent HP Elitebook for $600 before, wait for that. I can't recall the specs but it had a dual core proc. and Nvidia Quadro NVS graphics card with 512 dedi. RAM

Other than that, when you get some extra $$ buy her one of these they're a lot cheaper on ebay.

If she'll be doing any graphics works, she'll also need a display that can reproduce colors accurately.
Check here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...LCD%20Monitors
I have a HP LP2275W, it's a great monitor imo

Okay, just answer me this guys.

What actually speeds up the rendering process? More RAM, better GFX card or powerful CPU?

A combo of things. If your graphics card can't keep up with the programs its going to eat up more ram. You need to have all three of those (ram gfx card and cpu) up to the requirements or its going to put more stress on one of the other components.

What she said.

On another note I like the processor she has, but I don't care too much for the Mobo she has (Please don't feel offended, I'm not bashing you at all) I don't like that it's capped at 4gb memory, it leaves little room for upgrade capability. Thinking of 3-D rendering in the future the programs can become more intensive, and could require more resources from a computer.
