Default Old Computer...Turn it into a server?

I was wondering if i could turn my old computer into a personal server for myself?
Would this be a good idea?

My Specs are:
1.87 Ghz
512 Mb
Core Solo
Running Windows Xp and Linux if that matters?

If you need more info let me know.

I have another Computer that i can use and i was thinking of Getting Either a Apple Mac Book Pro or a New laptop Pc.
Havent quite decided so if you want to give inpute on that...that be good too

Yea you could run a website. You would have to type in your IP to get to it. Like have your music be accessed to all your computers on your home network. Software, try using Xampp to begin.

Aren't there certain versions of Linux made specifically for this?

I have a P2 400 128MB laptop with a USB external drive that is a media server. I nLited XP to the bare minimum and it has no access to the internet eliminating the need for anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.. I connect to it with MediaPortal and XBMC and it is totally stable.

I ultimately want to build an XP-based HTPC that will also act as a server. It will be almost silent, 1TB storage, enough to game at 720p, and wake on lan when other clients connect.

yes you can in a way, depending on what you mean

for web it will greatly depend on your connection speed, and the server load and everything else, so if theres large badnwidth useage, your internet is slowed down

but netowrk speed, anyone in same network = fast downloads speeds/ transfer speeds

If you don't hog bandwidth, and it's at most like 5 years old, yes.

I doesn't run 24/7 and has at most 2 concurrent video streams. It has been chugging along for 3 years now. If it dies this weekend, it is all your fault IzzehO
