alright i have a intel pentium 4 single core 3.0 GHZ Socket 478
im not sure on my speed if its 512k or 1mb and i know its 800 Mhz

how much better is this one?

It doesn't look like a worthwhile upgrade to me. You'd be better off getting more ram especially if your going to run vista

then go for a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, If I recall it will only accept celeron and pentium. But I suggest upgrading ram like 1st said.

i got enough ram xp sp3 1gb ram

extrem edition is way to expensive

that one is the HT is $25
is it worth it?

i dont think your going to see much of a performance boost with the cpu upgrade but even with xp sp3 i would recommend more then 1gb of ram

I have 4 gigs right now and I have issues with not having enough. The upgrade really doesn't look like it is worth the money.

I've had a p4 for 5 years, and once I got a Core 2 Duo it blew the P4 out of the water. My advice is to get a new MoBo that'll work with your current hardware, but Extreme Edition might be a good bet too.

I have a p4 3.4ghz HT in my home server and it runs fast. but of course i use ubuntu

Yeah, upgrade your mobo ( something thats compatible with dual core ), buy new/more ram, buy new cpu, if you can afford it anyway.

Your rig is as fast as its likely to go, 4gb ram on a 32bit operating system is fine, any more is wasted.
Your next step is a new mobo + cpu + psu + ram, even a low end dual core system will be faster
