Default Java Programming

Thanks to the college board being stupid AP Computer Science uses the programming language known as java. I personally prefer C++ over Java but I am now forced to use Java. I have a few questions.
1) Any big difference between C++ and Java I should know?
2) What would be the best IDE for developing Java applications?
3) Anyone already taken Java AP, if so, any information you have about it?

there's not that big of a difference between the syntax. I don't know if there are any major differences in other parts because I know only a little C++

my favorite is the old version of JCreator (2.50 i think).

I took it last year, if you can already program the class and the AP Test are ridiculously easy

I got a 5 on it =D

C# and Java are a lot alike.

Java is very Object oriented.

Java is actually my main language and its really easy.

For an IDE, use Eclipse. It works wonders! Also, make sure you use javaw and not java when you are running a GUI based program. javaw launches it without the command prompt.

Lol to that. My school was gonna drop the class because everyone got a 1 on it. I actually am considering just doing it as independent study myself.

Also, I already have Eclipse since, that is what my school is using. Money isn't much of an issue for the IDE for me he he he...

Yeah I did AP CS A, got a 1 on the exam. Exams don't really work well for programming because its such an trial/error process. And all of the multiple choices with different syntax is just bullshit.

Well my biggest worry is the fact that your taking AP CS and not even using a computer. Every programmer has a debugger so I figure they shouldn't be so picky but I doubt that is right.

Eclipse is a little bloated for simple coursework.

I used NetBeans and loved it.

Yeah I know, I'll probably go into something else computer related. There's just too many nerds in the field that will study their brains out to do better than me on tests.

Incorrect, sir. Java is object-oriented programming. If you have a very good understanding of objects, classes, methods, functions, you'll fly in this class.

Also, download this program known as DrJava. It's by far the SIMPLEST and EASIEST compiler that's built for students. All you do is type your single class file, hit compile, and then run - easy as that.

Netbeans and Eclipse are good for a lot of project-type shit (stuff you'll work on for two weeks), but from what you'll probably be doing, I assume DrJava will be best.

Here's a link:
DrJava

Lastly, if you want to purchase a book to help you understand or learn more, I suggest Head First Java (ISBN-10: 0596009208, ISBN-13: 978-0596009205) which runs $30 dollars at Amazon.com. It boasts over 720 pages all filled with easy, clear examples and instructions on what you are doing and what you may do wrong. It's very heavily illustrated as well so if you're a picture guy, it helps wonders.

All I can say is, have fun and enjoy it. Java is a great, multi-platform language, and you'll never have to look at nodes and pointers again, lol.
