Default Public Humiliation

I was rushing through this and I am very tired, so bare with me and my spelling/grammar in this thread.

Oshit... The FBI teamed up with local police in Alaska and they set up a prostitution trap online (craigslist). They busted 10 guys, most of which were 40-50 year olds. One was 18. He goes to my church. I feel SOO bad for him.

They let those 10 guys' names known. They had them mentioned on many radio stations, in newspapers, and on tv. Fuck...

That guy was kind of a loser, but I never thought he would do something like that (especially since its going against the religion). Now I'm afraid he might commit suicide... IDK. This is so fucked up..... and weird.

There have been other cases like this (I even remember seeing the same exact thing in a movie).

An example is some guy raped/killed 5 3-4 year olds that the police knew of (in a different country). They tied him up to a cross in the middle of a major city in that country and beheaded them. They left him there. This is a gay example, because he wasn't really humiliated (his family might've been, but they didn't do anything).

Another example is...

The police brought dogs to school (I forgot where) and they sniffed some weed out. It was in a car. They went in during lunch and busted the girl in front of everybody. This is a pretty nice example, because that's very humiliating.

Anyway, do you think public humiliation should continue to serve as a punishment or no?

If you're stupid enough to do it, then you're stupid enough to be humiliated in public (unless you're 18 and going to commit suicide because you're a loser trying to purchase hookers on craigslist- his life must suck).

You act as though the authorities are going out of their way to induce public humiliation which was (and this is key) not deserved in the first place. They aren't making youtube videos of the stuff, they are just exposing the facts.

If you would be embarrassed that people knew you were hiring prostitutes don't you think it'd be a good idea to just not do it? You are taking an inherent risk, if it's illegal and you are arrested you are at very least going to be in the sheriff's report in the local newspaper, and a good chance at making local news.

If that girl didn't want to be outed in front of the school, she shouldn't have had weed in her car in the first place. All that happened is the facts were brought to light, yes in front of everyone, but guess how the last 2 situations can be avoided. Don't bring weed to school or hire prostitutes.

It's really not hard, if you can't handle the possible consequences then don't do the crime. I think other people see these people being humiliated and it deters them from doing the same acts due to fear of suffering the same fate.

Public humiliation is for incriminating innocent people when they are assumed they did something wrong. For example, I was pulled over yesterday having a back-up camera on my car. Then the officers searched my car for a hour and a half just to say thanks heres your warning. But, in the process I'm sitting on the front hood of the police car in cuffs while cars are passing probably saying " Heres this bad kid getting arrested."

When I worked at Best Buy in the mid-90's, we used to have monthly store meetings on Saturday before opening.

At a store in the Chicago 'burbs and at the end of the meeting, four police officers in two cruisers and a paddy wagon stop. They arrested seven employees IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE STORE for internal theft. One was an assistant store manager who faked returns to the tune of about $18k. The majority of the arrests were delivery drivers/warehouse for doing a "trojan horse" with appliance deliveries (big boxes, back room, nobody arround and no Sensormatic on the delivery doors.

Was it necessary to arrest them in front of all store employees? From the business angle, I would say yes because it was a damn good deterrent for future internal theft. If it were me, I'd say that was worse than any punishment that I was going to get.

What about all those cop shows? Think about what those people have to endure from family/friends.

Depends on the crime...
if it's endangering others, hell yea, tell on em. (i.e. kidnappers / rapists / cereal killers)
BUT
if it's not causing harm to anyone, NO... (i.e. this story)

I think it's dependant on the situation
the examples you gave I think is immoral, as you already mentioned causing a risk of suicide is immoral and shouldn't be used in cases like that
but if it's something like a kid misbehaving in class to intentionally get attention, then some public humiliation sometimes works
or if some kid is being a vandal and destroying things, the community service highway work that they usually make the kids do is a good punishment because it teaches them a lesson without punishing them like a hardened criminal that they are not
