I have a long term and short term portfolio. Lately I've been investing in a lot of ETFs just because its less work for me and lets me invest in like an index and stuff like that. If you can find a good performing mutual fund though its much easier to let other people do the work.

i dont have any money in the stock market, but I've been thinking about an Ameritrade account. I've mainly been looking at penny stocks. The ones I decided I wanted to buy about 8 months ago recently went from 0.05 to $1.05. I would invest mainly in technology and energy. If you are doing 401k, I recommend tech, medicine, and energy.

My Dad invests, but he asks me for everything. LOL I told him to buy Google when it was $500, he said no, Google went to $700... I told him to buy Apple, (Of Course) at $129, he said no, went to $200. Now, we're stuck in Bearish market....

buy stock in SIRIUS satellite radio...they are about to be approved by the government to merge with XM Satellite radio, which will make it skyerocket.

alrite wow sandbox is loaded in etfs.
for thoes of u that dont know wat etfs are, they are generally reflected by the performance of the DOW/NASDAQ overall, as a whole.
for example, DXD is a short selling ETF, which means that if the DOW goes down u win. QLD is the opposite

i have 11k in tech and energy stocks. haha vci went up 14% for me today
but i lost hella lot last week cuz of google.

I did a bit ago, like last year but the market is too risky right now and I don't feel like investing the time. Best I got was $300 in apple and the stock almost doubled in a month, I used that money to buy the laptop I use now.

It seems that several of the people that have posted in this topic don't really know much about investing in the market. If you fall into this category, you should not be investing in individual stocks. Professionals that do this for a living have enough difficulty doing this, so the average investor should simply stay away from it.

A few people mentioned that they are invested in ETFs, which is definitely the better route to go if you want to have a presence in the market. ETFs have built in diversity that you can't replicate when investing only a few thousand dollars in individual stocks. If you want to take a little more risk than simply going into an ETF, Mutual Funds are probably the best path for you. However, you need to remember that Mutual Funds have fees that will eat away at your profit and that most Funds under perform the market.

If you have a large sum of money that you want to invest, I suggest hiring someone to do it for you. They will be able to do a much better job than you will ever be able to do. They will produce a higher return with lower risk over the long term.

Now if you insist on picking individual stocks, as I know many people find it enjoyable to do so, I would suggest to limit that portfolio to about 10% (no more than 20%) of your entire investment portfolio. Some of you have talked about huge gains that you've made in very short periods and for that I actually say you are foolish. The only reason you were able to make those gains is because you took on a very large amount of risk and it just happened to pay off for you. The odds of you doing this consistently is very low.
