Default Censor Calls for Parents Who Give R18 Games to Minors to be Fined/Jailed

Quote:
New Zealand's chief censor Bill Hastings has called for laws banning the supply of age-restricted games to minors to be enforced. Under current laws the offence carries a penalty of up to a $10,000 fine or 3 months in prison.

He says some prosecutions would have shock value and send a message that the agency is serious about limiting the exposure of minors to violence. Hastings is also trying to change the law so all video games can be rated.

"They might think the offence is silly, but it ain't. Parents need to get up to speed on the digital divide. They need to look at what their kids are playing and doing. I think the word 'game' can mislead people... It's not checkers," said Hastings.
This doesn't personally affect me as I'm above this age, but I know a lot of members here are below 18. So what's you're take on this? I used to have my mom buy me Explicit Content CD's all the game, and I had to have her buy me the original Resident Evil. No Harm done in my opinion, I haven't broken out and raped/killed anyone 'yet '

What's you're take on this?.

Seriously.. Limiting the exposure of violence to minors?. What about the television show currently ON right before they power on their game-console to play said games. Television has always had the ideology of 'if it bleeds it leads'. CBS/NBC are entirely made up of sex & violence, and that's basic broadcasting.

This.Is.Ridiculous.

Times are different, and clerks are different. I hate to sound old but 'in my day' I got carded when attempting to buy albums/games with mature ratings. Perhaps it's just a state-to-state thing, or person-to-person thing. But honestly, if you go to walmart, you'll never get carded for anything except cigs, and that's because they fire you on the spot if you sell without carding anyone who looks over 40 (or even if you're seen doing it on camera). Otherwise they give two shits less.

Wal-mart is def not an example to be used in this situation as almost everyone that works there could give 2-shits-less. They're too worried about getting on that 15-minute break.

This was a while ago though, I believe 2004-2005. People that time really didn't care about the age.

This is pretty random to even bring something up about NZ when only 1 person on these forums in from there.

It sounds like the whole purpose is just to be more restrictive on who is being sold the games since like many of you have said, minors have been able to purchase M games at stores without any problems. It's pretty much the same as carding at movie theaters for R-rated movies, they just want to see that it's actually being done.

The whole part about parents getting more involved about what their kids are doing is pretty pointless though. I don't know that many parents would care in the United States since there's so many violent things all over the place, but it may differ in New Zealand. Once you hit about 15 or so most kids tend to do stupid things anyway, so they should just let it be. Who hasn't done stupid shit with their friends?
