| Member | Nope. You can get free webhosting at places (usually pretty basic stuff, although nowadays you can get PHP, Apache, stuff like that for free as well.), but for a .com domain, you'll have to pay. Godaddy tends to be rather cheap, though, and a number of users are currently selling coupon codes for the place for free domains, so you can get the price down from $10 or so to $4-$5, depending on who you buy from. ![]()

Basically every website url is a unique "address". .com is the popular ending for most urls, others exist but some are reserved for governments or education institutions, .gov, .edu Websites like GoDaddy setup your "address" for you so that when people enter www.YourWebsiteHere.com, they are directed to the server(s) with your "house." It's kind of complicated since there cannot be two of the exact same addresses, because say you entered Google, it wouldn't know where to send you. TL;DR GoDaddy and etc setup your "address" for you. They own many many many many servers and are in contact with other servers which act as guides to directing servers to other servers. It's kind of complicated to explain. | |

Even if he got his own .com domain he'd need to know how to get stuff up on his site. I'd suggest at the very least, setting up your site on some site that lets you do that. This way, you know you'd be able to set up your site. I'm only recommending this to him, because anybody asking these types of questions probably doesn't know html or css and may not even have the slightest clue about setting up a website even with a free template they receive. Blogging can be done fine on wordpress.com and blogger.com without owning your own domain. There are also two other options, while looking cheap, may be all you wanted. Check out Dot TK - Renaming The Internet for information about a way to mask a freebie site. Also, google .co.cc to find another site that I'm assuming works similar to a .com except it's free. PM me more specifically what you wanted to set up and I may be able to help you further. |
