| Senior Member | Assuming the laptop is good enough to run vista, I would install vista before moving files. It really should not make a differance but this would be a tiny bit safer. And, I run vista on my laptop, and XP on all my PC's. Personally I like the looks/feel of vista and I have not had any issues with it

| THE MOD | There's more than just one version, instead of basic there's "base" http://www.dell.com/content/products/produ...~tab=bundlestab The specs are one of the first things you need to consider when installing vista. And I really don't think things like music and other things would be affected. My mom's laptop has vista and I never have any problems I can't fix or know right away what I did wrong, but if I were you, I'd just stick with XP.

Unless you have the harddrive partioned into 2 partions one a primary and one a slave drive. and installing vista on only the Primary drive. So i far i have been messing around with operating systems and have installed and dul-booted vist home vista premium xp mac osX and linux. |

| THE MOD | I don't think he's transferring the hard drive. More like copying the files from his family's desktop that he wants to his laptop. If you've dual booted linux before do you think you could help me boot ubuntu onto my computer? I made an installer disc but the step where I partition my hard drive always loses me.

| THE MOD | I tried it before, unsucessfully partitioned it wrong so it didn't even do anything. I'm gonna have to get back to you on this later though, leaving soon. One thing I'm worried about though is when I partition it...will it erase everything already on my hard drive?
