Default Java or c++?

what is a good language that can be learned for a beginner that has no clue about coding what so ever and how long would it take to learn it.

what books do you recommend that is easy to understand and that would explain the basics?

also how long does it take to learn a language?

I was thinking of buying this book Amazon.com: C++ Without Fear: A Beginner's Guide That Makes You Feel Smart: Brian Overland: Books cause people give it good reviews and i need to read something during my spare time.

any recommendations?

Java and C++ are both great languages for beginners, in fact those are the two langauges used at many colleges for the freshmen programming classes.

I know both languages and honestly... you don't need a book. There are plenty of tutorials out there online, and if you don't understand something you can always just look in the languages API for information on how to use stuff.

If you really insist on getting a book, the advantage of it will be "projects" that books sometimes have to do to help you after a chapter so you can use what you've learned.

EDIT: As far as 'how long', it really depends on what you mean by "learning" the language. You should be able to work your way around Java and C++ after a few weeks.

I like books over tutorials for what was mentioned before, the projects given. Usually they give you the steps to do in the beginning and you create something, then later they give you less and less until you can just do it.

C# for Sharp Kids

Keep in mind C# is not C++, but the concepts are similar.
